Antillean Mango

The Antillean Mango is a large hummingbird.

It is 5.12 inches long and weighs about 4 - 8 grams.

Males are largely green above and black below, with the green of the throat not bleeding into the black chest.

Females are green above and dull white below. They have red-terracota colored tail with small white tips at the end.

Call is a loud, high “tsit”.

Feeds on chiefly on nectar, supplemented by insects and other invertebrates.

Subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and heavily degraded former forest.

Found in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and Virgin Islands, U.S.

Nest is a cup-shaped structure woven from soft plant fibers. It is lined with animal hair and feather down, then strengthened with spider webs and other sticky material.

This webbing gives the it an elastic quality, which allows it to expand as the chicks grow.
