Beautiful Sheartail 

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Calothorax pulcher

The Beautiful Sheartail or Beautiful Hummingbird is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae.

It is a small hummingbird measuring about 3.5 inches in length.

Males have an expansive magenta gorget and long, forked tail (usually held closed in a point).

Females are buffy below with a dusky mask.

They very similar to the Lucifer Hummingbird that occurs to the north and is rarely separable in the field from Beautiful (male Lucifer Hummingbird has pointed outer tail feathers while it is blunt on the Beautiful Sheartail).

Both sexes have long arched bill.

Feeds at all levels, very often on cactus flowers.

Subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.

Southern-central Mexico.
