HUMMINGBIRD SPECIES

Black Metaltail

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Metallura phoebe

The Black Metaltail is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It has recently been threatened by deforestation and degradation of grasslands.

It measures about 5.11 – 5.51 inches in length.

Plumage is mostly black with subtle hints of red and green. Tail is coppery when seen in good light, and it has a small white spot behind the eye.

Adult males have a glittering green throat patch, which is smaller in females and absent in immature birds.

Its song has been reported to be a repeating "tsee" noise.

Like most hummingbirds it hovers in flight for most of its nectar feeding, and will also hunt arthropods.

Subtropical or tropical moist montane forest and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.

Endemic to Peru and possibly stretches to northern Chile and Bolivia.
