Blue-Capped Hummingbird

The Blue-Capped Hummingbird or the Oaxaca Hummingbird is a species of bird in the Trochilidae family.

It is a medium-sized hummingbird measuring about 4.33 inches in length.

Both sexes have a bright rusty panel in the wings, which appears as a blur when hovering.

Males are brilliant green overall with blue cap.

Females are pale gray below and have less white in the tail.

Mainly feeds at low to middle levels, darting quickly among flowers and flashing open its mostly white tail.

Favors humid evergreen forests and shade-coffee plantations.

The southernmost portion of the Sierra Madre del Sur in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Its tiny range is threatened by habitat loss.
