SCIENTIFIC NAME: Troglodytes aedon

The house wren is a very small songbird of the wren family, Troglodytidae.
It is usually divided into 3 distinct subspecies groups and 1 or several distinct island-endemic subspecies.
Some or all of these are often considered distinct species.
Northern House Wren – Canada to southern United States Southern
House Wren – southern Mexico, Central and South America
Brown-throated Wren – southern United States and central ranges of Mexico
Cozumel Wren – Cozumel Island off the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Adults are 4.3 - 5.1 inches long, with a 5.9 inches wingspan and weigh about 10 - 12 grams.
Subspecies vary greatly, with upperparts ranging from dull grayish-brown to rich rufescent-brown, and the underparts ranging from brown, over buff and pale gray, to pure white.
All subspecies have blackish barring to the wings and tail, and some also to the flanks.
All subspecies show a faint eye-ring and eyebrow and have a long, thin bill with a blackish upper mandible, and a black- tipped yellowish or pale gray lower mandible.
The legs are pinkish or gray. The short tail is typically held cocked.

SONG: A series of rapid jumbled musical notes, often repeated in rapid succession. They also have a number of other vocalizations with chattering and harsh scolding notes.

Prefers semi-open habitats including residential areas, parks, forest clearings and edges, farmstead groves, and brushy thickets. They shy away from dense vegetation without openings.

The nest is a large cup nest made from small dry sticks and is usually lined with feather, hair, wool, spider cocoons, strips of bark, rootlets, moss, and trash.

The female lays between 2 and 8 red-blotched cream-white eggs and incubates these, for around 12 – 19 days.
