Important Tips In Choosing Glass Hummingbird Feeders

One of the best ways to attract hummingbirds is, by hanging up glass hummingbird feeders. Hummingbirds are magical little creatures. Hearing the buzz of their wings and seeing them flit around as they dine on nectar can be a truly gratifying experience.

There are quite a few different styles of feeders on the market that are geared toward hummingbirds. Some of them are made from plastic while others are made from glass. Glass hummingbird feeders tend to be higher quality than their plastic counterparts, often lasting for years. You may find that glass hummingbird feeders turn out to be a better long-term investment since you can continue to use the same feeder long after you purchase it.

Before you buy a glass hummingbird feeder, however, there are some important factors to consider. Here are some of the things that you should keep in mind.

Ease of Cleaning

You need to be able to frequently clean out the hummingbird feeder to prevent mold from growing inside. If the area where the nectar is stored is too narrow, it can be difficult to clean properly. The same holds true for hummingbird feeders that have intricate flowers or other tiny parts on them that may become moldy if they are not thoroughly cleaned. In general, it is best to look for a bowl-shaped feeder that can be easily cleaned.

Perches

Oftentimes, people buy hummingbird feeders that don't have attached perches because they like to watch the birds fluttering midair. Sadly, this can cause the birds to burn more calories than necessary, essentially negating the benefit of the food that you are providing for them. Instead of making them flap their wings while they eat, you should look for a feeder that allows them to perch on the edge. You can still watch them from your window, but they won't have to exert all of their energy trying to eat.

Color

Ideally, you should buy a red hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds are notorious for being attracted to the color red. Whatever you do, avoid buying a yellow feeder since these sometimes attract bees and wasps. If there are insects hovering around the feeder, hummingbirds will be less likely to visit.

Durability

Make sure the hummingbird feeder that you buy can be hung securely without falling. This is particularly important with glass hummingbird feeders since they will shatter if they fall to the ground.

Size

Typically, it is better to buy a smaller hummingbird feeder rather than a larger one. If you have a medium to large size yard, you may want to buy more than one hummingbird feeder to accommodate all of the birds. That way one or two dominant birds won't hog the hummingbird feeder and prevent the other birds from eating.

These simple tips should help you find the ideal hummingbird feeder for your home. Before long, you should have countless little hummingbirds happily visiting your yard and garden. By choosing the right feeder, you can be sure that they are getting clean, mold-free food and that they are comfortable while they eat.

  • It never would have occurred to me that a hummingbird feeder should be red since they are attracted to that color. My wife and I want to get a feeder for our yard, but we are worried that all of the food will be eaten by ants since we have a lot of those in our area. It seems like it would be a good idea for us to find a feeder that is antproof. https://thehummingbirdfeeder.com/store/
